Taskforce on the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"It really boils down to this: that all life is interrelated. We are all caught in an
inescapable network of mutuality. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.
We are made to live together because of the interrelated structure of reality."

(King, "A Christmas Sermon on Peace," 1967)

Mission of the MLK Taskforce: The enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is a vibrant reminder to us of the unfinished work of civil rights and social justice in the United States. Dr. King's courage, persistence, and willingness in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles are still exemplary qualities for all of us to emulate. April 4, 2008 will mark the 40th anniversary of King's assassination, a devastating occurrence for Americans and people all over the world. The Taskforce on the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., initiated by Gregory Blimling, Vice President for Student Affairs, held its first meeting on October 11 and is comprised of faculty, students, and administrators on the New Brunswick/Piscataway Campus.

The Taskforce intends to promote, recommend, and present programs, activities, and projects,
inside and outside the classroom, which commemorate and make more visible not only Dr. King's work but also the work of those who were his contemporaries and peers in the black freedom movement.

Recruitment for Public Service Announcements

We are seeking undergraduate students willing to participate in a series of public service announcements on the intergenerational impact of Martin Luther King Jr. on their lives. These
public service announcements will be recorded and shown on RUTV and will be part of the
University's multimedia informational campaign about the legacy of MLK. Participants can choose to either share personal thoughts on MLK or read from his speeches and writings.

Contact Lori L. Smith at lori@rci.rutgers.edu if you are interested in participating in this project.
